An excreta flow diagram (also often described as shit flow diagram, SFD) is a tool to readily understand and communicate how excreta physically flows through a city or town. This tool aids in making informed decisions regarding urban sanitation planning and programming, catering to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The SFD reports illustrate the journey of faecal sludge from containment to its ultimate destination, whether it is unsafely discharged into the environment or safely disposed or end used, presented as a percentage of the total population at the municipality/city corporation level. The SFD Lite report functions as a brief narrative report outlining the diagram and service delivery context, including the supportive environment in which services are provided. Additionally, the intermediate SFD report provides a detailed account of all data sources used in developing both the diagram and report – detailing consulted stakeholders, reviewed documents, and all validation processes carried out for quality control purposes.
